Every object made of wood needs to be polished in order to eliminate any splinters that could be very dangerous.
According to the size of the object to be smoothed, there are different tools.
First of all, the sand paper. Slide it back and forth on the surface to be smoothed. This can be done either by hand or by using a pad. To create this pad, you need a piece of foam to glue on the sandpaper so that you have a more comfortable grip.
The file follow, particular files used to smooth the protrusions of the wood. There are different shapes: square, triangular, semicircular. It is advisable to use them in the same direction as the fibers, holding them with both hands. In this way it will be easier to make a constant movement and a pressure equal to each brush.
The belt sander, on the other hand, is an electric tool which rotates a strip of abrasive paper on its two rollers. There are different belt sizes, while the rotation speed is related to the speed of the motor.
Being a very cumbersome tool it is often replaced by an electric file. Same characteristics and same usefulness but with reduced dimensions.
Finally, there is also the orbital sander, an electric tool that has an abrasive paper plate that rotates in an orbital way thanks to the presence of an elastic joint connected to an eccentric fixed to the motor.
